其中*是中短篇小说。我认为Through a Glass, Darkly的中篇小说版本可以得A，但是长篇只能得A-。

至此我已介绍完了Helen McCloy全部的长篇作品。它们可以分成两个部分，一个是以Dr. Basil Willing为主角的系列作品，共计13部，剩下的是非系列作品共计14部（不包括两部短篇集和中篇小说Better Off Dead，尽管它出过单行本）。总的来说Dr. Willing系列更侧重推理，非系列作品更侧重心理悬疑。但这也并不绝对，比方说The Goblin Market从风格上来看就更像非系列作品，事实上在那部书里Dr. Willing也是到最后才亮出身份。

从时间上来看，这27部长篇可以大致以1951年为界划分成两个阶段。早期作品比较侧重侦探(detection)，晚期作品更侧重悬疑(suspense)，列举如下：

其中BW代表Basil Willing系列。当然这个划分也不绝对，比方说作者最好的不可能犯罪小说Mr. Splitfoot就属于第二阶段。这只是我个人的很粗的划分。

我研究这个单子的时候发现，在1957年和1963年之间有一个长达6年的间隙，其间作者没有出过一部长篇小说！我注意到Helen McCloy和Brett Halliday（也是著名的侦探小说家）在1961年离婚，忍不住大胆猜想，会不会是作者在那段时期家庭出了问题，以致影响到了产量？（是不是太八卦了……）

Mrs. Bradley在少年劳改所偶然得到一本女老师A的日记。日记当中A记述了一系列事情：劳改所逃跑了两个小孩，A帮助他的表兄B和B的妻子C找到一幢闹鬼的住宅，A的姨妈D被萝卜丝噎死，B从楼上窗户摔下来差点摔死。日记在一个地方突然中断了。

Mrs. Bradley得知B从楼上摔下来两次，第二次的时候摔死了。A作为主要嫌犯受到审讯，但后来因证据不足开释，随后不久她投水自尽。Bradley造访鬼屋，了解到B生前邀请朋友来家搞通灵术，结果房间里真的出现家具移位的现象(poltergeist)。

Bradley发现从A的墓碑上的日期推算出的年龄和A的实际年龄不符，并由此发现真正溺死的是A的妹妹，A冒充她妹妹活着。是A杀死了她妹妹吗？不然她为什么要假冒身份？

Bradley在鬼屋外面的井里发现秘道，通到鬼屋里面，并在下面发现失踪的两个小孩的尸体。是谁害死了他们？

本作的核心诡计和Helen McCloy, She Walks Alone (1948)有相似之处，个人认为McCloy的作品要好得多。

本作是Gladys Mitchell的代表作之一。它暴露了Mitchell的几条典型硬伤：

1. 叙述冗长。本作的情节其实比较简单，没有必要写得这么啰嗦，大段的英式叙述让人昏昏欲睡。
2. 情节混乱。没有什么条理可言，感觉作者想到哪儿写到哪儿。
3. 缺乏逻辑。所谓的“推理”其实根本不是推理，甚至也不算“心理分析”，充其量就是Bradley的感觉，一点也经不起推敲。比方说Bradley认为小孩死在B之后，就没有什么证据。

优点只有一个：Mitchell擅长让凶案发生在奇怪的场景(setting)，这次是劳改所和鬼屋。

另外本作的章节标题很有意思，呈中心对称分布，就是第一章和最后一章的标题一样，第二章和倒数第二章的标题一样，等等。让人想起Helen McCloy, The Man in the Moonlight每章标题都以Ex开头，以及Ellery Queen, The Greek Coffin Mystery每章标题首字母连起来形成THEGREEKCOFFINMYSTERYBYELLERYQUEEN。

Prix du Roman d’Adventures 1931（冒险小说赏）

六个好兄弟五年后重聚平分一笔巨额财产。A从船上跌落水中溺死，不知道是事故还是谋杀。有人在窗外向B开枪，B身受重伤，大家出去叫人，回来以后却发现B连同身下的床罩都消失不见！是谁搬走了濒死的B？

C坐电梯上楼，电梯在二楼停下，开门以后D看到的却是已被刺死的C！C在瞬间死亡，死人如何能够按下按钮，开动电梯？这个谜团很快就被解开：

警方在河中发现了一具无头尸，尸体躯干上有一条纹身”To Frida for life”，由此确认是消失的B。接下来D、E、F又一个接着一个地死去……

本作的诡计今天看来很普通，但是在1932年能想出这样的诡计还是值得小小地表扬一下。对比Ellery Queen, The Egyptian Cross Mystery (1932)，Agatha Christie, Ten Little Niggers (1939)，以及多年后高木彬光《纹身杀人事件》(1948)。

其中*是短篇。我接下来会介绍这个单子里的全部作品，如果有什么遗漏欢迎大家补充。

ermite方面：Gladys Mitchell

这个比较麻烦一点，没办法像Helen McCloy那样系统整理，主要有四个原因。第一、Gladys Mitchell相当多产，写了66本书（！），不大可能全部看完。第二、这66本书良莠不齐，尤其是中期以后的作品本格意味基本缺失，读来令人兴味索然。第三、她的很多书已经绝版，入手极为困难，只要在eBay上看看就知道。第四（也是最重要的一点）、她并不是我很喜欢的女作家。相比之下我还是更喜欢Agatha Christie、Dorothy Sayers、Ngaio Marsh、Christianna Brand、Helen McCloy、Craig Rice、Elizabeth Daly、Phoebe Atwood Taylor、Amelia Reynolds Long这类偏重诡计和情节的作家，而不是像Gladys Mitchell和Margery Allingham这样擅长人物和场景的作家。

网上有一个很全面的介绍Gladys Mitchell的网站，上面有四个人(Jason Hall, Nicholas Fuller, Steve Steiner, Andrew Osmond)读过超过60部的Mitchell，并且不遗余力地给看过的书做了排名。我对他们每人挑选的前十名进行了统计，总结出下面这个单子：

Adey的单子显然比网上形形色色的“密室书单”要高出不止一个档次。这个单子里面只有两本书我从来没有见过，分别是Louis Zangwill（Isarael Zangwill的兄弟）的A Nineteenth Century Miracle，和Eric Harding的Pray for the Dawn。真希望什么时候能搞来看看。
